Hot Off the Press
So I’ve kept my lips sealed for a long time about something very exciting, but now I can tell you: Sunset magazine featured me and my vegetable garden in the April issue!!
They sent out the fabulous Jim Henkens to take photos of the garden way back in August of last year, and I’ve been waiting on pins and needles to see the results. The issue just hit newsstands and I am thrilled (thrilled!) with the article. It is really very fun to see me, Jon, the chickens, and our garden in the pages of one my very favorite magazines. Jim’s photos are so gorgeous and I am extremely flattered by the very nice write up.
I’d like to thank Sunset for including me and my garden in their special gardening issue. The entire issue is just beautiful and full of tips that I want to use in my garden this summer (like hanging wire baskets full of strawberries from a fence). Thank you! Thank you!

I got a call yesterday from my mom. Her April issue of Sunset had just arrived. She told me she was casually flipping through and thought to herself…that looks a lot like Willi. Wait, it is Willi! I am going to go get a copy at lunch time…can’t wait to see the article. The pics above are lovely. Congrats!

March 23rd, 2009 at 12:03 pmCongrats! I got my Sunset in the mail on Saturday and your feature was the first thing I noticed. The article and photos were gorgeous, although it did give me a serious yearning for warmer weather here in Seattle!

March 23rd, 2009 at 3:00 pmWe’ve been away and our mail’s been on hold, but I hope our issue’s waiting for us when we get home! Congratulations again!
March 23rd, 2009 at 3:38 pmMy Sunset mag arrived this Saturday. I opened it up to the table of contents and thought – wow that looks like willi, and I was so excited when I immediately realized it was you! You’re garden looks amazing, are your tomatoes really 8 feet tall? That’s what it looks like in the picture. What a great article, and beautiful garden, congrats!
March 23rd, 2009 at 3:43 pmThank you so much for all the nice comments! We were surprised to find that the girls and I made the table of contents page. Fun! And yes, my tomatoes got ridiculously tall last year. I think it must have been all the compost, because it certainly was not due to the weather!
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:22 pmWilli,
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:38 pmCongratulations–much deserved, and no surprise at all to your old prof.

March 24th, 2009 at 10:47 amWilli – I echo Scott – I thought we might have seen you in SF. I already knew you were a star though – I know you from the crazy OG folks. Garden looks great. Hope to see it when I am in Seattle ?

March 24th, 2009 at 4:22 pmI am so thrilled that Sunset did a feature on you so I could find your wonderful blog! I too had the pleasure of watching my boyfriend dig up an enormous patch of grass so I could indulge my inner farmer. I’m still a renter and I can’t bring myself to ask my landlord for even more space for a chicken coop, but it will be priority number one as soon as I buy my first place. Until then, I will have to live vicariously through you!
March 25th, 2009 at 9:38 amWhat a beautiful garden! I look forward to reading the article.
March 25th, 2009 at 4:41 pmCongratulations!!! Beautiful (garden and you and Jon).
March 25th, 2009 at 4:48 pmI join the hearty congratulations! I look forward to listening to you on KUOW every Tuesday as I drive to my office. Some days, I’m so inspired I consider playing hooky and go home to dig and plant. Now – how do you get peppers to grow in Seattle? They’re one of my top two veggies but mine never quite take off, leaving me with only one or two admittedly tasty fruit…….
March 25th, 2009 at 6:20 pmCongrats Willi!! My friend Andrea brought the issue to work today & we shared the viewing at lunch time together. It’s a beautiful piece & I’m jealous of your lovely gardens. Maybe I should trade you jam for garden consulting??
March 25th, 2009 at 7:23 pmYou and yours are inspirational.
March 25th, 2009 at 11:47 pmBig congrats, Willi.
I haven’t seen the issue “in person” yet but it looks great! Love Sunset. Love your blog… great match!
March 26th, 2009 at 10:23 amI just got my issue in the mail- what a beautiful article! I was planning on planting the Nero di Toscana variety of kale (after loving the roasted kale recipe you posted), and was happy to see that you gave it an endorsement. That’s enough for me. Thanks and congratulations!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:54 amI was so excited to open the mag up this month and see you!!
Congrats!
March 27th, 2009 at 9:03 pmKudos, Willi!
March 27th, 2009 at 10:59 pmHi Willie and John…Betsy let us know of your “spread” in Sunset and we quickly rushed out to buy the magazine…what fun to see you both and your lovely garden and chickens…hope one of these days when we’re visiting Dinah and Betsy we can come for a “tour”…congratulations…xoox Dina
March 28th, 2009 at 6:17 pmI saw your article in Sunset (my fav magazine too!) and just had to check out your blog! As I prepare to start my 2nd year in a Portland Community Garden I cannot wait to check out your blog for advice!
March 29th, 2009 at 4:50 pmSaw you at City People today… I was the one who said, “You’re like a celebrity now…”
Great blog you have. So glad Sunset wrote about you so I could discover Digginfood.
March 29th, 2009 at 8:37 pmSo cool, Willi! I had just bought the new Sunset mag just after emailed, to read on my trip up to Orcas Island, what a funny coincidence. It was so fun to see your picture and read the article… Congrats!
March 30th, 2009 at 1:25 pmA star is born…and she can lay eggs as well! You my dear have always lit the room with your smile and infectious enthusiasm. Congratulations!

I will be going out today to find a SUNSET copy so I can learn more about you and what you’re doing. Love your website – have learned so much already from you! This is our first year for our homemade composter and raised beds. We are even experimenting with a strawberry barrel we made. Coming across your website was kismet and you’re inspirational. Congratulations on your SUNSET celebrity! But mostly, thanks for your savvy and sublime inputs and advice.
April 1st, 2009 at 7:37 amI just bought the Sunset magazine today because I wanted to get ideas on how to start my own organic vegetable garden and I fell in love with your garden. I also was planning to plant ivy to hide my ugly fence, but after seeing your garden I have decided to grow climbing vegetables instead. I love the look of the vegetables in the left side and the back fence of the picture above. Can you tell me what you are growing there? I would love to grow those against my fence, too. Thanks Willi for the great inspiration!
April 8th, 2009 at 11:20 pmGloria–How exciting that you are planning on growing food on your fence this year! We grew beans and butternut squash up the fence. Here’s a link to a post that details how we built the trellis:

[...] could surely tell you, my garden does not look worthy of a magazine spread right now (thankfully, Sunset called last year!). I couldn’t bring myself to take any photos of my beds, but I thought I’d share some shots of [...]
