Lucky Me

seedswap_package

Last week I found a neatly wrapped box on my front step. When I opened it I let out a little squeal and did a quick happy dance in the kitchen. My seed and recipe swap package had arrived!

My swap partner Kelly sent me a recipe for Honey Tomato Buschetta with Ricotta, including instructions for homemade ricotta! I absolutely cannot wait to make the recipe with my ‘Black Cherry’, ‘Green Grape’, and ‘White Currant’ tomatoes this summer.

Kelly also sent along bees wax candles and an Eggling with basil seeds. I have been longing for an Eggling for years—it is a little egg-shaped ceramic container that you crack open with a spoon and grow herbs in!

I’m dying to know what everyone else who participated in the swap got. Do tell! I know for sure there was at least one other extra lucky swapper. Check out the package that Christine from Lavender and Limes put together. I just love the sweet details on the handmade envelope, especially the vintage button!

I received my lovely seeds today. Jen sent ‘Sungold’ tomato seeds and large leaved sweet basil. She also send a sweet note with her recipe. That was the most pleasurable thing of all because she wrote about eating this ‘Sungold’ sauce with her young children. I remember when my children were small, and I was always trying to get them to eat vegetables. :) Thanks Jen, and thanks Willi.~~Dee

I was excited to receive my swap in a homemade envelope from Scotland! How those seeds got through customs, I do not know, but I’m glad to have them. The recipe for Cullen Skink (smoked haddock soup) sounds delicious and I can’t wait to give it a try.
We should share our recipes. I have been on a yogurt and cheese making kick and want that ricotta recipe. The bruschetta sounds amazing, too!

As you well know Ms Galloway – my swapping angel… I received the most wonderful package of bean seeds – opening them felt like Christmas. Along with came a wonderful family recipe. And isnt family what this is sort of all about? Didn’t we all first learn about gardening from our Mothers or others just as close? food and creation and love and something from “nothing”…thank you for putting this together….

My sender sent me beans which I had not intended to grow but which have been one of the delights of my first-time veggie garden: they are very rewarding to watch grow and to help twine in the right places. I was late getting them in the ground due to all the rain we had in June but they are growing like mad and producing delicate mauve flowers.
Yesterday, however, was a sad day. After a couple of days not watching the garden I found late blight on my tomatoes. It is all over New England and I had hoped that my secluded little corner of my garden would stay blight free. We did manage to get the first tomatoes off last week but I will have to trash 3 plants that are laden with green cherry tomatoes, maybe 6.
Fortunately my day was somewhat saved as I found the first tiny beans hanging on the bean plants! This was a real tonic to me after the crushing disappointment of having to dispose of the tomatoes. So thanks to the recipe/seed swap for saving the summer and giving me hope.

How do I get in on this seed and recipe swap? I just discovered this blog today through one of our honey suppliers here in Saskatchewan, and I LOVE it already.
