Love It: Ruby Streaks Mustard Greens

mustardgreen

Let me introduce you to ‘Ruby Streaks’.  For me and Ruby, it was love at first sight. I just couldn’t resist a lovely little mustard green with chartreuse stems and lacy burgundy leaves. But her flavor sealed the deal. Big mustard taste—but not too much spice—with a hint of wasabi. My only complaint? She up and bolted on me when the weather turned hot. But that’s okay. She spiced up my life for a few weeks, and that’s just what I needed.

‘Ruby Streaks’ is available from Botanical Interests (full disclosure: I picked up this seed for free at the Garden Writers Association conference back in September). One packet comes with more than enough seed for several plantings. I’m putting some more in this weekend and will share a recipe for Stir Fried Noodles with Peanut Sauce and Asian Greens next week. Happy Friday!

so many things started to bolt this week! Oh well, guess they are just making room for more yummy things.

    Lovely!

And, as much as I loved our heat blast of late, I’m with you on the bolting problem. I’m not sure how well my cauliflower weathered the last two days of heat. I hope with the return of the June chill, things will be okay. (Btw: If you get overloaded with mustard, I’d be happy to do a leafy greens trade. I didn’t grow mustard this year.)

So that’s why some of my broccoli rabe and tatsoi are bolting! This weather. Thanks for the heads up. (Ruby’s beautiful!) :)

Those are beautiful plants, I may have to pick up some seeds for a later planting this year. I’ve used their seeds for almost everything in my garden this year and everything’s been growing well.
I had tons of my plants bolt early on my balcony garden, mostly arugula and baby bok choy. My radishes turned into trees while I was away, too. I’ve never seen them get that tall. Luckily my kale just grew a lot and didn’t bolt, so I have a bounty of greens.

These mustard greens are absolutely stunning! Wouldn’t they just be fabulous in a floral arrangement with peonies and lillies? Let’s give it a shot in a few weeks when the seedlings have matured…
