Cute Idea: Recycled Crate Planter Boxes
I’m a total sucker for old wooden crates. So I was thrilled when I recently spotted not one but two (!) wooden crates that had been repurposed into planter boxes.
The first sighting was a wine crate filled with zinnias on the patio at my friend Robin’s house. Isn’t it fun?
Then when I was over at Lorene’s making pickles I popped out into her garden and spotted this little box filled with pea greens. Lorene had a bunch of extra pea seed, so she just filled up the crate with potting mix, sowed the pea seed heavily, and has been snipping off the tops and adding them to salads all summer. Such a good idea!
Lorene and Robin are both bloggers and you can check out their gardens at Planted at Home and Garden Help.

Willi it was fantastic sitting in the garden with you and enjoying cocktails and your tales of Cuba. Dare I admit it? Zinnias could very well be my favorite flower (and that’s saying something)! I’m loving this wooden planter and hope to add more to my garden soon!
September 2nd, 2009 at 2:54 pmI adore wooden crates too but everywhere I see them they cost a small fortune and yet everyone I know who uses them seems to obtain them for free. Right place at the right time I guess?
Those are gorgeous zinnias, but then I am a total sucker for anything that bright and cheerful.

Also, bulbs sometimes come in wooden crates, too. So if you see any packaged this way at the nursery, ask if they’ll give the crates to you when the bulbs have sold.
