Keeping the Garden Outside

doormat_blue

At the beginning of March we dug up a big portion of our backyard to install more vegetable gardening space. The project is almost done (!) but in the interim we’ve tracked approximately five yards of soil into our house. I swear, all I do is sweep. Having a doormat outside the mudroom would really help (as would actually taking off my wellies and leaving them on the deck).

I’ve been on the hunt for a mat that is nice and thick and not made of rubber. These 100% coconut fiber mats from India Rose completely fit the bill.  Not only are they really cute and only $35, but you can compost them when they wear out!  My only problem is I can’t decide which one I like best.

Can’t wait to see your new garden space. Personally, I like the brown & pink one with the birds. I’m not a huge fan of pink but I really like the pattern and the birds. Good luck picking – they’re all beautiful.

I’m partial to the blue/green flowers at the top. In fact, I think I might order one for myself. I also like the red bird silhouette.

What are the plans for the new space? Do you find that you still have room for your dog as well? I have wanted to dig up at least another area in my yard for a raised garden bed, but my husband is concerned both with aesthetic and taking away space from our dogs (a great dane and a lab).

The blue, and I’m totally ordering one as we speak. It’s time for a new mat anyway and what a perfect time to get one!

Very cool that you can compost them! I love knowing that I can recycle stuff when I’m done with it.

Angela and Kalin–I’m totally leaning towards the pink one, because it has the honeycomb pattern and birds on it, but I also really love the blue one. Maybe I’ll have to juts order one for our front door too!

Meg–I know, don’t you just love the birds? They also have a green one in the same pattern.

Melissa–New mats will really spruce up a porch just in time for summer, I think.

    Wendy–Sounds like a cute dress :)

Gardener on Sherlock Street–Totally. I was drawn to the patterns and then when I saw they were compostable, I was totally sold. I think I’d probably cut them into small pieces with my little pruning saw when the time came, because I imagine it would take awhile for the whole mat to break down.

We were just looking at door mats today, but none inspired me. Of the 4 choices of yours, I immediately liked the first one (with the turquoise color/flowers), but the one with the pink, brown and birds is delightful. Oh, gees! They are all delicious. Good luck with that.

Go with the teal blue one; it’s so colorful. (Now I want one too!)
