Domino the Garden Dog

Today’s post comes from the files of too cute to handle. This weekend while I was cooking dinner our dog, Domino, was bugging me to play. I told him to go outside and get his favorite toy, a squeaky stuffed bumblebee. Apparently he couldn’t find the bee, but he decided that this overripe cucumber was even better. He ran up on to the porch with it, very proud of his discovery. He then proceeded to run around with the cucumber in fast circles in the yard and then plop down and gnaw on it.

Animals are an integral  (if sometimes frustrating) addition to my garden and Domino’s antics made me think it would be fun to do a whole post on pets in the garden. So if you have a cute shot of your dog, or kitty, or bunny, or chicken, or goldfish in the garden, send it to me at info@digginfood.com by Friday!

This is so strange- but I JUST realized that I’ve met Domino, held your chicken (Inky!), and snacked on veggies from your garden! My friend Mike house sat for you last year, and I just just just now made that connection! Too strange… and hopefully not creepy :)

Renai–How funny! I’m glad to hear that Domino and the girls got plenty of love while we were gone!

Willi- I have no photos, but I have a question about chickens. One of my chickens is missing :-( as of this morning, but I dont know if she is just hiding in the yard or if she snuck out of the fence. I looked all over but I can’t find her. I also just found her first egg this morning, so I am thinking maybe she is hiding in a good nesting spot she found. Do your chickens ever hide? She usually follows me around the yard whenever I am out asking for treats. The other three chickens are still here, but they aren’t laying yet, so maybe they dont care about finding secret spots.

    I am worried about her!

Juliana–I’m so glad she turned up. One of our hens gets broody at this time of year and will often hide in the garden. Once I found her sitting on about 12 eggs! She was hiding underneath a gigantic cosmo plant. Please do send pics!

Good generalization on Domino’s behalf – the overripe cuc does resemble a large bumblebee shape! No wonder he was proud!

Hilarious! I can’t keep my dogs out my tomotoes. My ridgeback just realized that there was one turning red and keeps trying to for it. I probably won’t have any for myself this year.

I was just thinking today about how irritating the chickens are in my front garden. I can’t keep them out of it. Your Domino is so cute though.

Wish I had photos. We once had a Lab named Liza, one of the smartest dogs ever. Being part of a big family living in a rural area, we had acres of ‘garden’ that Liza loved to roam. She seldom strayed far from us kids, but one day Mom saw her headed toward the garden (hidden from direct view of the house by a large stand of pines). Mom followed, and witnessed Liza sniff out a ripe ear of corn, stand on her hind legs & pull the corn from the stalk with minimal damage to the plant ! Mom was too amazed to scold, so Liza enjoyed her prize (not her first or last, apparently) in peace.

I wish I had a great photo to share! My previous dog would do the same as Domino but with a tomato. He waited until they were red then would pluck one off. He would then proceed to jump around so excited about his steal. He also liked fruit. We had a plum tree and he once got drunk off the fermented plums on the ground! Eyes all glassy, stumbling about….too funny.
My current dog likes blueberries! We had to build a protective fence because he would eat them all given the chance and blueberries are sacred in our family!
