Spinning A Web

When I was a kid we had this book called Be Nice To Spiders. I always think of it at this time of year because big tan and brown spiders spin their webs all over our garden. We find them in the tomato plants, strung across pathways and on the chicken coop. We spotted this web on our deck near the hop vine. It looked lovely in the evening sunlight, so I decided to take a picture. Right after I snapped this shot the spider sprung up and snagged a fly. She spun the fly into a mummy and then crawled back down into place. I guess she plans on saving her dinner for later!

We had that book too! It was my grandfather’s favorite one to read to us at our camp:)

Great picture, but wow, what a sight that must have been. Have seen many spiders, but never one in action. You are so lucky. Thanks for sharing.

I ran right through one of these webs earlier today. It was at forehead level. I’m glad I saw the poor spider before I went into full freak out mode. It’s spider season. Time to remind my six year old how hard these little guys work to make their webs to catch their food. She enjoys watching them at work.

The spider is a garden orb weaver. A lovely creature indeed.

Staci–Isn’t it such a good book! I read it at the book store a few months ago and was reminded how much I like it.

Patricia–It was pretty cool. And yesterday I saw a wasp eat a spider out of its web. Pretty cool watching predators in action!

Blair–Walking through webs it the worst. A few weeks ago we were watching a movie and I felt something on my neck and it was this huge spider. I think it got in my hair when I was closing up the chicken coop for the night and then crawled down. I completely freaked out!

Ralee–Thanks so much for sharing the name. I’ve always wondered!
