March Desktop Calendar: Seed Starting

When Anne Bryant and I decided to offer the desktop calendars on DigginFood this year, we brainstormed ideas around the theme of urban homesteading. One of the goals of urban homesteading is to be more self-sufficient and starting your own vegetable seedings from seed indoors is a great way to take a step down that path.

To help celebrate Anne’s beautiful calendar, I’m going to post my best seed-starting tips tomorrow and I will be doing a free seed-starting demonstration at Molbak’s Nursery in Woodinville, Washington this coming Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

To put the calendar on your computer’s desktop, all you need to do is choose the size that best fits your monitor and then click on the link below—the file will automatically download to your computer and then you can set it up as your background image:

Oh, Grow Up: Using Vertical Space in your Vegetable Garden

When: Friday, February 18th from 11:30 to 12:30

The easiest way to save space in your kitchen garden and grow more vegetables is to use your vertical space. This workshop features reviews of commercial plant support systems and techniques for using trellises, cages, and stakes for veggies, including hands-on demonstrations of building a cedar squash trellis and bamboo teepees, tomato cages, and teuteurs.

Gourmet Gardening

When: Sunday, February 20 from 2:30 to 3:30

In this photo-filled lecture, I will explore the diversity of food in our gardens. You’ll learn how to harvest crops like garlic scapes and green coriander, learn about the best vegetable varieties for the Pacific Northwest, and how to create a succession planting plan that allows you to keep your garden productive all year long.

Northwest Flower and Garden Show

The Best Varieties for the Pacific Northwest

When: Wednesday February 23rd from 9:30 to 10:30 pm in the Hood Room

Come learn which varieties grow best in our cool Maritime Northwest climate. I’ll be sharing my favorite picks on warm season favorites like tomatoes and eggplants as well as the best herbs, salad greens, and ornamental edibles. Plus, ideas for growing and eathing these crops.

When: Friday February 25th from 3:45 to 4:45 on the Smith & Hawken DIY Stage

I’ll be at the demonstration stage showing how to build a super easy, portable, and flexible box that you can use to grow a big range of salad greens. Perfect for apartment gardeners and people who have the itch to grow some food but not a lot of time.
